Talking Heads

One face, fourteen stories. Participants slip-cast the same life-sized head, then gave it their own voice. Together, the heads strike up a conversation – and you're invited to join in. Leave your own commentary to become a part of the dialogue.

A pale beige glazed head on a rough slab base. Its face and skull are broken open in jagged pieces, and coiled gray-brown snakes push out through the openings. One snake's head, with small black eyes, hangs down near the chin.

Close-up of a slip-cast face with a crackled, metallic green-silver glaze, framed by tangled hair woven from raffia, twine, dark indigo-dyed wool, and sheer plastic and fabric scraps.

A bust of a woman with short swept-back hair and a calm, direct gaze, finished in a speckled stone texture. She wears a Greek key pendant on a choker and a draped garment across one shoulder, edged with a Greek key border.

A matte, sandy taupe head, seen at three-quarter view, carved all over with a repeating geometric pattern of overlapping curves that form four-pointed stars, covering the face, scalp and neck.

Side profile of an unglazed white porcelain head, facing right. A crown of glossy, brightly colored sculpted flowers in red, pink, blue, purple and yellow, with a small bumblebee among them, rings the top of the head.

Side profile of a slip-cast head glazed glossy black, facing left. A crown of pale, bone-white antlers, tinged rust-brown with iron oxide, is tangled across the top of the head.

Side-profile ceramic teapot shaped like a head, facing left, in creamy off-white unglazed clay with a calm face and glossy blue eyes. The lid is a purple-and-white glazed mohawk topped with a metallic silver luster crown. A spout extends from the back of the head. Silver luster piercings line the ear and nose, and a gray spiked choker with silver luster studs circles the neck.

This assignment was a fun and creative experience that allowed me to express my artistic side while also engaging my analytical side. I enjoyed exploring the connection between art, Greek mythology, and my personal interests, combining creativity with research and critical thinking to create a piece that was both meaningful and uniquely my own.

This project has given me the opportunity to express my feelings in a visual and tangible way. It has forced me to think about what I create and that I want viewers of my piece to reflect on their feelings as well.
